Saudi Officials Foster Plant-Based Alternatives and the Food Tech Industry through Local Partnerships
Arab News reports that Saudi Arabian officials have recently entered into deals with local food and agricultural enterprises. This is to strengthen the country's plant-based alternatives and food tech industry.
Representatives from the Saudi Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture, as well as the Cooperative Societies Council, the Saudi Greenhouses Management and Agricultural Marketing Co., and health foods company Ayla Food Options Co., jointly committed to promoting healthy plant-based diets and developing meat and dairy substitutes, with a focus on supporting local production, during a signing ceremony in Jeddah.
The initiative carries multiple aims, including advancing agricultural production, enhancing food security, and promoting environmental sustainability by reducing reliance on animal agriculture.
To further advance these objectives, the Saudi Ministry of Environment will establish a research center dedicated to agricultural product development. This center will focus on creating alternative proteins using food technology.
Market research conducted by BlueWeave Consulting indicates that the vegan meat market in Saudi Arabia is projected to experience an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.4% from 2022 to 2028. The growing demand for plant-based options is primarily driven by increased consumer awareness regarding healthy eating choices, lifestyle considerations, and concerns about the environmental impact of traditional livestock production.
Several companies actively participate in the country's market, including VBites, Sonic Biochem Limited, MGP Ingredients, Beyond Meat, Amy’s Kitchen, and Quorn Foods, among others. Meanwhile, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the food manufacturing group IFFCO commenced operations of the region's first alternative meat facility under its brand THRYVE. This was with a target of capturing 5% of market share.
By forging these agreements and partnerships, Saudi Arabia demonstrates its commitment to adopting sustainable and innovative food practices. These practices hold promise for a greener and more environmentally conscious future. As global demand for plant-based alternatives grows, the country's initiatives are expected to yield positive economic and environmental outcomes in the long run.
