Egypt has witnessed a notable surge in the adoption of veganism, with a growing community over the last five years. Whether motivated by ethical considerations, a focus on health, or a combination of both, an increasing number of individuals are embracing a vegan lifestyle. Active online communities, particularly on Facebook, such as the "Vegetarian/Vegan Society of Egypt," serve as vibrant hubs for like-minded individuals. Interestingly, many Egyptians are naturally inclined towards veganism due to their traditional cuisine, which includes popular dishes like kushari, foul, and falafel—all inherently vegan. Additionally, Coptic Christians in Egypt observe a significant portion of the year by following a vegan diet, known as "syami food." Although in-person vegan meetups occur on a smaller scale, they provide valuable opportunities for the community to connect and share experiences.

Egyptian cuisine is a treasure trove for vegans, offering an abundance of delightful and traditional dishes. From the iconic falafel made with beans to the hearty Kushari—a flavorful medley of rice, lentils, and pasta topped with spicy tomato sauce—there's an array of dishes that perfectly align with a plant-based diet. Mesaa’a, a tasty eggplant and tomato stew, is also a vegan favorite. The rich flavors of Molokhia, a green leafy vegetable stew, and Bamia, okra cooked in a savory sauce, provide a satisfying culinary experience. Moreover, the various versions of Mahshi, stuffed vegetables like bell peppers and grape leaves, are easily veganized and bursting with flavors. Completing this array of delights is tahini, a versatile and creamy sesame paste used in a myriad of ways, showcasing the richness of Egyptian vegan cuisine.

Today, various companies cater to the vegan and Coptic Christian community by offering a range of plant-based and syami (fasting) alternatives. These options encompass vegan cheese, plant-based milk, alternatives to meat like beyond meat, tofu, as well as vegan versions of kofta, shawarma, and shesh kebabs.
